About Us
SAVE GHANA is a non governmental organization (NGO) which seeks to operate towards the fighting of poverty in the northern regions of Ghana and the Upper West in particular.
The organization will operate in the Sissala West District of the Upper West Region. According to the Ghana Living Standards (2000) the three northern regions are the poverty stricken areas in the whole of the country, with the Upper West Region topping the list. It is therefore against this background that SAVE GHANA is helping in the fight against poverty, good governance in these areas of the region. The Sisaala West District is one of the newly created Districts in the Upper West Region, making it more prone to poverty, suffering, gender inequality, low women participation in decision making and side-lining women when it comes to the ownership of productive resources.
Sustainable economic and social development is at the heart of SAVE GHANA, which first appeared in the 1980 World Conservation Strategy as shorthand for Brunt land Report as “economic and social development that meets the needs of the current generation without undermining the ability of the future generations to meeting their own needs”. However, by the time of the second summit in 1992, a worsening of major environmental trends and persistent poverty in a world which was richer than ever before which led 170 governments to agree on sustainable development as a policy framework for tackling evidence that the demands of human economic activity were overwhelming the capacity of the Earth’s biological systems to supply resources and services.
SAVE GHANA therefore believes in what the American author, Richard Norgaad said (1943) that “The policy challenge of sustainable development consists of finding a path towards a positive social and ecological co evolution” therefore, Women and children are the target of SAVE GHANA. This because, 781million people are illiterates, two thirds are women; women also provide 80% of food and do 70% of the unpaid work in keeping the family together but receive only 10% of the income; furthermore, less than 2%of land titles and only 1% of global property belong to women. Our intervention we believe will usher us into the achievement of the MDG’S.
